...doxologies...

52  Blessed be the Lord for ever. Amen and Amen” Psalm 89:52.

Psalm 89 ends with this simple verse: “Blessed be the Lord for ever. Amen and Amen!”

I bring this to your attention because this is also called a doxology.

Doxology is a hybrid word because it is composed of two words.

Christian doxologies are derived mostly from the Greek language and mean:

doxa, which means glory, and logia, which means word!

Doxology is a word of glory to God!

In Christianity there are many doxologies that praise God’s Glory!

Many appear through the centuries in daily prayer and praise, and in worship. Many doxologies are sung, giving worshipers the opportunity to praise the Glory of God!

Perhaps the most famous of all doxologies in the bible comes from

Luke 2:14, when a multitude of heavenly angels appeared to shepherds in the fields and announced the birth of Jesus Christ:

“13 And suddenly there was with the angel of the Lord,

a multitude of the heavenly angels, praising God and saying,

14  ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace among those whom He favors!’”

Take time today and consider a few of the other doxologies in the bible, of which there are many

“…27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for ever! Amen” Romans 16:27.

24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand without blemish in the presence of His glory with rejoicing,

25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen” Jude 1:24.

1 Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary;

praise him in his mighty firmament!

2 Praise him for his mighty deeds;

praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

3 Praise him with trumpet sound;

praise him with lute and harp!

4 Praise him with tambourine and dance;

praise him with strings and pipe!

5 Praise him with clanging cymbals;

praise him with loud clashing cymbals!

6 Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise the Lord” Psalm 150!

Here are a few liturgical doxologies you may recognize from worship:

THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS: THE GREATER DOXOLOGY

Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you for your great glory, O Lord God, heavenly king, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. You that takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. You that takes away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You that sits at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For you alone are holy, you alone are the Lord, you alone, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW

(“THE DOXOLOGY”)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;Praise Him, all creatures here below;Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
