...I Trust You, Lord...

1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty

2 will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.’

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence;

4 he will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refugehis faithfulness is a shield and buckler

5 You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day,

6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you

8 You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the Lord your refugethe Most High your dwelling-place

10 no evil shall befall youno scourge come near your tent

11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

12 On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone

13 You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot

14 Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name.

15 When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them.

16 With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvationPsalm 91!

This is a most-beloved Psalm that speaks of God’s protection over us all! It is also a most-beautiful Psalm that speaks to those seeking wisdom, the wisdom of God! Many hymns and contemporary psalms have been written and sung with verses from Psalm 91. The blessings of godliness and the pursuit of wisdom are for all who seek God as their highest good in life. To this end the psalmist relies on several names for God: Most High, the Almighty, the Lord, and my God! The psalmist also encourages us to call out to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust. These names of God build confidence in our hearts, and remind us of the power and endearing love of our God. Each of these names of God inspire us to confess to, to speak to, and to rely on God who is “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust” (v.2).

The description of the protection of God is also couched in metaphorical language, which is very common in the Psalms: “shelter,” “shadow,”“refuge”, and “fortress.” There is imagery of a bird under whose wings the baby birds find safety (v.4).

But who may enjoy the hospitality and protection of God is answered in a personal, experiential manner: “I will say of the LORD, my God, in whom I trust.” If this confession is on your lips, this confession helps you walk in the path of wisdom.

Consider the images of protection in this psalm:

= the MOST HIGH will shelter you…

= the ALMIGHTY will show you…

= the LORD will be your refuge and fortress…

= your GOD will be your trust…

= God will deliver you and cover you under His wings…

= God will be your refuge…

= God will be your faithful shield and buckler…

= with good, no evil will come near you…

= the Lord will be your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place…

= no evil shall befall you…no scourge come near your home…

= God will command His angels to bear you up…so you will not falter…dashing your foot against a stone…

= God will trample under foot the lions and adders in your life…

= God will love you…deliver you…an protect you…

= When you call on God…He will answer you…

= When you are in trouble, God will rescue you and honor you…

= God alone will satisfy you and show you salvation!

Today, take some quiet time, come before the Lord and tell Him with all your heart:

Oh LORD, my God, I trust You.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy win me a sinner!
