...it's Christian love -- or nothing...

“9 Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; 10 and indeed you do love all the brothers and sisters throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, beloved, to do so more and more, 11 to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we directed you, 12 so that you may behave properly towards outsiders and be dependent on no one” 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12.
Love your brothers and sisters more and more, live quietly, mind your own business, and treat outsiders the way you wish to be treated! That is what I hear in these verses more than anything else. These words are terrific advice about how we should all live our lives. When you make any decisions that involve others, treat them as you wish to be treated. And be careful about gossiping or complaining about others; instead, just be quiet.
How different our lives would be and how different our world would be if we followed Paul’s advice to the brand new Christians! Christianity is not lived just one hour a week on Sunday mornings. Imagine the impact this way of living would have for the poor and the sick, and especially the elderly. This is what Paul is trying to teach new Christians about living the Christian life.
But we will never buy into Paul’s teachings without loving others, which is why Paul starts his reflections with loving others. Without Christian love, without loving each other as Christ loves us, we just treat others according to our own laws and opinions.
The Christian life is not about being soft towards others, but about being compassionate and loving. The Christian life is about treating others as God treats us. And remember this: when we love as Jesus loves, we forgive others. And we forgive because that’s the way Christians are supposed to live. Forgive! Forgive! Forgive!
So take stock at how you treat others. Make changes where necessary. Remain in prayer and remember that your actions speak louder than your words.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
