Today we begin the 1st Letter of John. May God bless us all in this journey.
“1 We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life — 2 this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us — 3 we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete” 1 John 1:1-4.
This is a different opening! There is no greeting that identifies the author or the recipients of this letter. It simply remind us of the message the listeners heard when they first became Christians. This message rested on the firsthand testimony of those who saw, heard, and even touched with their hands the Word of life, the Lord Jesus Christ. It is on this testimony, the author says, that the readers’ fellowship with him and their fellowship with God are based. The “word of life” is from the beginning, a word that they’ve heard, a word that they’ve seen with their own eyes, and touched with their own hands — and it’s the “word of life!” It’s the word that has been revealed to them by God, and they’ve seen it and give their testimony to this fact, and now they are declaring to everyone. And now they are sharing with the world “the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.”
And John’s reason for proclaiming what he has seen and heard is “so that you also may have fellowship with us.” But the reason for sharing this word with them doesn’t stop there. They are sharing the word so that you and I might have fellowship “with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
Dear friends, what John is passionately trying to tell us is that the Word of God IS Jesus Christ! Not just a bunch of stories and quotes! And so the Word of God, who IS Jesus Christ, wants to build an eternal relationship with us. And when John says that he wants us all to have fellowship with him, is to remind us that are to build an eternal relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the Word of God, TOGETHER with one another. Fellowship is just that — two fellows on the same ship, sailing together to the same location! We are not meant to sail alone in life, trying to figure out who Jesus Christ is!
And John knows Jesus Christ personally. He has seen Jesus Christ with his own eyes, and John has touched Jesus Christ with his own hands, and so John knows the power of doing this together! IT’S OUR LIFE — THE WORD OF LIFE!
This is the only way to have joy in life, says John (see verse 4).
Dear friends, this is such a passionate way of begging us to read the bible and inject in into our hearts and souls. Be people of the Word of God!
This is why I base this daily blog on God’s word, not my own! This blog is not about what I SAY — but about what GOD SAYS!
So be in prayer today and pray — based on what you “hear” God saying to you in the Word.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner.
